1. Preface

This book takes as its starting point a set of handwritten notes by Venanzio Capretta which he used to teach a short course of five lectures on category theory at the 2014 edition of the MGS summer school in Birmingham, England.

We transcribed Venanzio’s notes into reStructuredText, added some material, and typed up solutions to many of the exercises. (Solutions will be made available in a separate document at some point in the future.)

We hope the result of this effort turns out to be useful for self-study or for future courses in basic category theory.
